VoIP telephony is the new emerging alternative to standard telephone systems. It is not rare for comparisons to be made between VoIP and standard telephony. However, more often than not, these comparisons are spread out across the Internet. For those hoping to learn about some of these comparisons, this can be very frustrating. So, to make your task simpler, here are three main differences between VoIP telephony and standard telephony.
1. The telephone system
With standard telephony, your phone system is a physical piece of hardware with physical phone lines. On the other hand, with VoIP telephony your phone system is virtual and requires no hardware. This is because it works through the Internet rather than through a landline. The same can be said for businesses, since VoIP telephony also offers a virtual PBX.
2. The network
Standard phones operate through a standard network. This network is dedicated entirely to your phone usage. With IP telephony, your calls are made through the Internet rather than a dedicated phone network. As a result of operating through a pre-existing network, your calls will cost less. However, it is important to verify that your current Internet package is capable of sustaining a VoIP system.
3. The devices
Like the networks, the devices used in standard telephony are dedicated to your calls. Indeed, a phone is meant primarily for calling, and often won’t allow for anything else. With VoIP phones, your devices are not necessarily dedicated to VoIP calls. You can use any device which has access to both an Internet connection and a VoIP softphone. As a result, you can make VoIP calls from a VoIP phone, a smartphone, a tablet, a computer, etc.
Those are the three major differences between VoIP and standard telephonies. If you wish to learn more about the advantages of VoIP telephony over standard telephony, our future articles will be of help.
