VoIP telephony has made a lot of progress these last few years, and it will only get better from now on. Companies both large and small have made the switch to IP-based phone systems, and VoIP phones are becoming increasingly popular with individuals. But with all the recent hype surrounding the current benefits of VoIP, what other benefits could VoIP telephony provide down the line? Here’s a look into the future of VoIP.
1) Convergence
Though convergence is already something VoIP offers, there is still a lot of progress to be made. Since VoIP uses an Internet network rather than a standard telephone network, your phone system becomes yet another service that functions through the Internet, alongside emails, music services and movie streaming services. However, VoIP is still a very recent technology, and there is still a lot we haven’t seen. It is very likely that VoIP services will become much more connected to other Internet services.
2) Public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi is unfortunately not very reliable right now. A strong connection can be hard to find, and even stable connections have a limited range. However, if recent years are an indication of what is to come, we may see a large increase in the quality and availability of public Wi-Fi. Once that happens, the workings of VoIP will suddenly change; with a stable Internet connection available almost anywhere, VoIP users will no longer need to rely on a mobile Internet provider for their phone needs.
3) Mobile phoning
While VoIP has had tremendous success in the business world, the mobile market hasn’t seen the same success, with the majority of users having a free VoIP app. However, that will no doubt change very soon. Since most business plans are compatible with mobile apps, businesses will be able to take advantage of a hybrid phone system which includes both physical phones and mobile phones. This will allow further flexibility for employees, and will make on-the-road work far simpler.
With these prospective benefits, VoIP telephony has a very bright future ahead of it. Who knows: it may even overtake traditional telephony someday soon.
