Sometimes you might need to call outside of your area and you might need to pay long distance fees. While these fees aren’t anywhere as bad as roaming fees, it can still add up to quite a lot.
One way to solve this problem if you often need to make international phone calls would be to get a phone line through a VoIP provider. Doing so would allow you to call for free outside of your area. If you often call in a particular area, you could set your number to be in that area and allow anyone living in that area to call you without making them pay for long distance fees.
Another way would be to download a VoIP client and ask the person whom you are calling to do the same. Since you are not directly calling and are using the internet instead of a phone network, you would not have to pay for any long distance fees. Certain VoIP clients even allow you to see who you are talking with if that person has a camera on his device.
